Update: Tournament progress

I hope you will be glad to hear that the development of the tournaments is well on it's way to completion. I would estimate that 80% of the code is completed and tested. Most of the remainder of the development is getting the look and feel of the web pages correct and in line with the rest of the site.

Bear with me for a little longing! I'm hoping I'll find enough time between the day job, family commitments and, most importantly, the Rugby World Cup, to get the dev completed sometime in October.

Almost there......

I've decided that as the only remaining development for the tournaments is cosmetic, I'll be opening the first tournament within the next few days. Only one tournament will be created with the aim of using it as a test of the functionality while I contiune with the remaining work. With only myself testing it's proving to be a bit painful to run a tournament in the test area. Too much logging on and off is involved!

I won't be broadcasting the opening of this "test" tournament, so if you want to be involved send me a message and I'll let you know when you can join.

The test tournament is open.

Click on the Join Tournament button to take part.

I have set the tournament to have 0 move time and 14 days game time. This is to limit each round to a month. There are places for up to 16 players. There will be 2 players per group, with the winner progressing to the next round. In a case of a draw both players will progress. 3 points for a win and 1 for a draw in each game. The players in each group with be decided by player ranking. The highest ranked player will play the 9th, the 2nd highest the 10th, etc.

Finger crossed this all works!

Stoney, is the tournament just for players with experience and with high ratings?

Thank you to all the players that signed up for the First Tournament. The quota of 16 players has been reached and the first round is under way.

At present there is no reference on your games page or on the individual game pages that a game belongs to a tournament. That will be rectified soon.

Now that the bulk of the work is done for tournaments it is going to be a lot easier for me to apply small tweaks to the system. I've already started on upgrading the player page and the first rough version of the sorting/ordering mechanism is available. Note that this just a *rough* version and much more functionality is on it's way.

Good luck to all playing in the Tournament! I am looking forward to following the games when they show up as Tournament games, and following and supporting the players.
Thanks to Stoney X for all your sustained hard work in making this brilliant website and trying to provide what members want.
I have looked on several chess playing sites and find them far too complex and in one case quite rude and unfriendly. This one is user-friendly and straightforward. I was tempted to say to those who boasted a sophisticated site with hundreds of features that we want to play chess, not be cluttered with a lot of trivial irrelevant features!
Having said that, maybe one thing to add to my wish list (no, not photos, please!) would be some sort of time-zone clocks or an idea next to a player's nickname of what time it is in their country. Just so we don't sit up all night hoping for a move when the other guy is deep in the land of nod!
I am not able to travel or even get out much so I can't tell you how exciting it is for me to play with people all over the planet!
Anyway, here's to a great Tournament and hopefully the first of many!
Chessica (the one that has never won a game of chess! But is it not great that I can now stave off my king's demise for 50 moves ?!!!)(heroic end games!)

I'm aware that as there are no restrictions on who can enter tournaments we will have instances where new players join and then disappear of the site after enrolling in a tournament. Furture updates to the tournaments will include the ability to limit entrance to, for example, players who have completed x number of games and/or particular rating bands. For now though if you do find your opponent has disappeared then feel free to claim a timeout. In fact on tournament games the intention is to automate timeouts in case both players disappear.

I've started the 2nd tournament a bit early. It was originally intended for 32 players, but as it's been at 28 players for a while I kicked it off.

Tournament 3 will be created soon. This will be a "league" style tournament with long move and game time, 10 players and everybody players everybody else. That's 18 games.

restrictions

dont restrict players on ratings could we do it on date joined or games played as some players use the computer in their head and not programs to asst. Although a top ten or top fourteen tournament would be great to watch.

Round 1 of Tournament 1 is complete and is ready for round 2 to start. Before I click the proceed button I want to do a bit of testing on the dev site to make sure this works! This will be done before tomorrow.

siddles01, when I do put rating/game played/etc restrictions  on tournaments, it will only be on some tournaments, not all.

Restrictions

I think ratings restrictions on some tournaments is a good idea.  I've just started a couple of tournament games with someone 800 points above me in the ratings!

Whilst I will appreciate the chess lesson I am about to get, I can't help thinking that it will be a bit dull for my opponent.  Open tournaments are great, but I for one can understand that the better players may find them somewhat less than stimulating.

Of course, they may not care.  In which case, ignore me :)

One thing that may help newbies is a short entry on the help page that describes the different type of tournaments and how they work (eg who progresses the next round if scores are tied etc)
